2010 - acrylic on canvas - 40x40" - 100 x 100 cm
The TAKING SHAPE series is inspired by Nature’s boundless repertoire of organic shapes and hues. It is an evocative exploration of the dialogue between human action and nature’s inherent unpredictable reaction. Each piece is a metaphor for the artist’s fascination with the fluidity and dynamism of the artistic creation process and the perennial quest for the right balance between control and surrender.
The process begins with the artist painting a foundational canvas. She then proceeds to pour liquid paints of different viscosity and hues onto the surface of the original artwork over a period of days or weeks. In so doing, she fully embraces destroying parts of her painting and relinquishing ultimate control in anticipation of how each action will have a somewhat unpredictable reaction. As the paint cascades, spreads, and intermingles, new forms emerge, take shape and evolve. The artistic process is an elaborate dance between controlled actions, like gentle canvas motions, and external elements, such as gravity, hygrometry, and the innate behaviour of liquid media.
Each painting thus mirrors the convergence of human actions with the unpredictable reaction and transformation of the natural world. The series highlights the tension and harmony between control and chaos, intention and unintended consequences. It captures the moment where human creativity meets the raw forces of the natural world, producing an artwork that neither could achieve alone. TAKING SHAPE is a meditation on this partnership, where the artist’s vision and nature’s reaction coalesce to create ever-shifting landscapes of colour, texture, and form, reminding us of the profound interdependence between human actions and the world around us.
