2023 - acrylic on canvas - 39”x39” - 100x100cm each (shown here installed as a triptych)
At first glance, this body of work may evoke images of vibrant sunsets or the shifting hues of ancient rock formations. Layers of colours and shifting mark making represent different facets of the human journey. Through intricate mark makings and rich colour palettes, from fiery oranges and deep blues to soft greens and muted greys, INNERSCAPES allows viewers to lose themselves in landscapes that feel both otherworldly and deeply intimate.
But beneath these alluring scenes lie explorations of the inner self. Each layered landscape in the INNERSCAPES series invites viewers to explore the metaphorical strata of the human psyche—the sediment of memories, identities, and experiences that shape each person in unique ways.
The series serves as both mirror and window—a mirror reflecting the intricacies of our own inner worlds, and a window into the rich complex layers within others. Each painting can be viewed as an introspective self-portrait for viewers to explore their own "innerscape". They can also encourage us to look beyond the surfaces of others’ lives, much as one would gaze upon an unfamiliar terrain, to consider the richness and beauty of the layers that lie beneath. In a world where we often perceive and judge others only through brief, surface-level interactions,INNERSCAPES asks us to pause, to look deeper, and to appreciate the untold stories within others. We are challenged to journey into the unseen, show curiosity and empathy towards those different from us.
