The ongoing SAKURA TRAILS project is a spatial and temporal departure from traditional cherry blossom photography. While crowds flock to capture themselves by flowering trees in full, curated glory, the artist waits to capture the fleeting traces of the celebrated blossoms.
Remnants of those photogenic blooming trees appear decontextualised in every way. Detached from their natural environment, delicate fallen petals are shown clinging to the city’s grime, swept into gutters, wedged in hard cracks, drowned in puddles, or trampled in alleyways. The sharp juxtaposition is a metaphor for how mankind and nature cohabit.
The artist also sees the delicate trails of fallen petals as unfolding storylines and momentary glimpses down memory lane. Each petal is a precious vessel holding fragments of secret stories and ephemeral memories of joy or unspoken sorrow. Each pile is a dispersed poem, a melancholic composition, an image of longing. Windswept trails of petals appear like confetti found the morning after a party, scattered across a dirty dance floor, still resonating in silence. In the city’s loud and crowded corners, each petal seems to murmur: “Forget me not.” Her camera duly captures them for they will all be gone tomorrow.
The photographs in SAKURA TRAILS are intimate yet quietly defiant. They play with contrast, juxtaposing traces of nature in harsh urban settings, soft and hard textures, memory and erasure. They are a visual meditation on impermanence, remembrance, and the art of exposing the unseen.
