It emphasizes how easily it can be manipulated, altered and obscured. It is ultimately a profound commentary on alternative facts, erasure, and the distortion of the past and the rewriting of history. The artist begins by pouring white paint along a central line before using a roller to imprint a series of perpendicular white marking patterns on a stark black background. The initial white line evokes the ultimate truth and the perfection of unaltered memory appearing like a vivid flashback. With each repetition, the initial patterns tend to naturally recede and alter as they project outwards. The artist then deliberately further distorts the markings by painting over and altering them with black paint. Some patterns are subtly denatured, others more radically so. Yet in either case, these manipulations twist the concept of reality on its head as the act of adding colour in fact gives the visual illusion of subtraction. The black paint doesn’t merely obscure; it rewrites the narrative, symbolizing how truths and memories, once clear, can be intentionally manipulated. What was once white—a symbol of clarity, honesty and truth—becomes layered, blurred, or entirely erased, challenging the viewer’s perception of what is genuine. The black paint represents the forces of distortion: the slow decay of time, the trauma of extraordinary events, or the calculated interventions of external influences seeking to reshape collective or personal memories. The resulting paintings suggest the visual language of electrocardiograms, seismographs, or geological formations, references underscoring the themes of life’s rhythms, the passage of time, and the imprints left behind. But these trails of memory are in fact altered, scarred, and incomplete. They mirror the vulnerability and malleability of our collective memory which gets distorted by time and external forces, intentional or otherwise. In an age of unparalleled access to information why do we stay so stubbornly siloed, bound by innate tribalism, lured by partisan voices and drawn to the siren call of confirmation bias? Why do we find such comfort and strength within our corner of an increasingly polarised society? Why do we remain such easy targets to social media algorithms? At first look, each painting appears like a pictorial map of a set of irreconcilable diverging voices and schisms. Each piece begins as a seemingly finished painting on an unstretched canvas. The artist then dismantles her original work by painstakingly cutting it into strips an act symbolizing the shattering impact of trauma where once-complete identities or narratives are pulled apart into seemingly disconnected pieces. Through an arduous process, she eventually reconstructs a second artwork from the fragments of the first one. The original order and shape are invariably altered through a mix of intended and unpredictable circumstances. What emerges is inevitably a new composition, a storyline that is altogether transformed yet recognisable. Each idiosyncratic and unique. An initial rectangular painting could morph into anything from a square triptych to a set of nine small circles. In all cases, the reconstruction process includes obscuring part of the original storyline behind overlapping strips of painting as if to hide parts of one’s traumatic past from others, and oneself. The series captures viewers’ imagination and invites them to puzzle together the fragmented pieces searching for storylines of what may lay beneath. In fact, each work is a testament to the transformative power of self-renewal and the art of adaptability. They reveal a more dynamic and complex identity forged from experiencing hardship. Yet, the story doesn’t end there, it’s only the start of a laborious journey. She then proceeds to fracture the linear narrative by cutting up the original two-sided painting into strips. This rupture mirrors how a major traumatic event wreaks havoc and impacts every inch of one’s life. The strips are then painstakingly reassembled and affixed onto a new painted stretched canvas representing the foundation of the next chapter of one’s life. In this transformative phase, the fragments of the original painting often reappear in a shuffled order and their forms is at times spiralled out of shape and forever distorted. Hidden underlayers are occasionally revealed. The protruding fragile slashed edges of the original painting become integral to the work’s beauty and meaning. The process embraces chaos, disorder, and the interplay of individual intent and external unpredictable forces. The resulting pieces are more than paintings, they are sculptural entities bearing the scars of their creation. They may not be easily decipherable but can be felt viscerally. They challenge the viewer to look deeper, to appreciate the interplay of strength and vulnerability, revelation and concealment, chaos and composure and to find meaning beyond the surface. The process begins with the artist painting a foundational canvas. She then proceeds to pour liquid paints of different viscosity and hues onto the surface of the original artwork over a period of days or weeks. In so doing, she fully embraces destroying parts of her painting and relinquishing ultimate control in anticipation of how each action will have a somewhat unpredictable reaction. As the paint cascades, spreads, and intermingles, new forms emerge, take shape and evolve. The series’ name derives from the circular brushstrokes in Zen art. It is an exercise in searching for the right balance between perfection and imperfection, control and surrender, tension and harmony. The works are created through the meditative repetition and overlay of hand-drawn circles, no two alike, made by varying the hand gesture and/or the brush size. The unevenness of the brushstrokes highlights human imperfection and individuality over idealized symmetry and collective thinking. Each brushstroke embodies the balance of effort and surrender. A particular attention is placed on the significance of voids and breaks in the circles. Symbolism and beauty are to be found in the very nature of the imperfections and incompleteness. It features portraits of women who have become enduring symbols of protest and defiance starting with Neda Agha-Soltan, the young philosophy student whose murder during the 2009 Green Movement demonstration was captured on video for the world to see. Alongside Neda are the faces of women (Nika Shakarami, Sarina Esmailzadeh and Minoo Majidi through her daughter, Roya Piraei) whose lives were taken or irrevocably altered during the 2022 Woman, Life, Freedom uprising, a movement that erupted in the wake of the death of Mahsa Amini following her arrest by the “morality” police for not being veiled enough. What started as a protest against the oppression of women grew to include wider demands for overall freedom for all. The women portrayed in "Weaves of Resistance" were featured in publicly available coloured photographs. The artist had them printed in black and white to strip the images of temporal cues, giving the piece a timeless, memorial quality. She then cut them into strips and symbolically wove them together to create a new mosaic-like image. This act of weaving suggests that no single story stands alone, each woman’s life is inextricably linked to others in a tapestry of struggle and resistance. The seeming distortion reflects both the fragmentation of truth under authoritarian regimes and the challenge of transmission. But in its very construction, "Weaves of Resistance" resists erasure. Though harder to decipher at first glance, the new fractured composite portrait offers a richer, more layered narrative on collective history and memory. It aims to confront the unsettling realities of oppression, injustice, and inequality that persist in many corners of the world. The first visual cue is in the title itself. The artist has created a visual antonym for the word “freedom” by rendering it with interlocking E’s to symbolize entrapment, encaged rights, and restrained voices. The artist’s very name, Azadeh, means "free-spirited" in Persian, the language of a country she fled from at an early age. Keenly aware of the erosion of freedom around the world she has created a body of work with a deep sense of social responsibility. This series invites viewers to move beyond passive observation and engage with the emotional and political weight of those silenced, displaced, or marginalized in the name of a higher power. “In the Name of FREƎDOM” is a call to consciousness. It confronts the systems and structures that deny basic freedoms, asking viewers to reflect on their roles in the global struggle for justice. How much freedom is there really around the world? Who is it limited to? Is the country or group I’m affiliated with somehow complicit in any way? The series aims to break through apathy, challenge the viewer not only to witness, but to reflect, to feel empathy, and to hopefully act. It seeks to offer a visual platform for reimagining a world where freedom is not the privilege of a few, but a true universal right for all. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/538cb8fbe4b0348ae7fd3a41/1758920917960-WNNU0JQOI297756IVSDL/Innerwoven+-+lr.jpg + PROJECTS - INTERWOVEN, 2023 United Nations Day, October 24, 2023 Dear Mr Guterres, Israel became a welcoming haven for Jews seeking safety and freedom from centuries of atrocious persecution throughout Europe through a mix of international diplomatic wrangling and occasional violent actions by Zionist paramilitary organisations (seen as freedom fighters by some, terrorists by others). Over time, for reasons including some Palestinian acts of violence, the perennially oppressed became the oppressor; the child that was beaten grew strong and started hitting. As Amos Oz poignantly and presciently said over half a century ago, “occupation is corrupting. It corrupts the occupier, and in a different way, it corrupts the occupied.” Two people who have legitimate existential equal rights to freedom and self-determination have faced one too many cycles of violence breaching human rights and international humanitarian law. Enough with tribalism, radicalism, and leadership dictated by extremist voices, on both sides. The October 7th Hamas-led massacre and abduction of civilians was abhorrent. The siege of Gaza, the forced displacement of over a million people, half of whom are children, and the countless civilian deaths whether through bombs in Gaza or settlers’ attacks in the West Bank are condemnable. All innocent civilian lives matter! Palestinian resistance has long been seen by some as a cancer to be eradicated, but this misdiagnosis avoids treating the core issue and in so doing ultimately weakens and endangers the patient’s long-term wellbeing. Violence feeds extremism. Revenge at any cost, is ultimately at the cost of ones Humanity. We need a paradigm shift: the wisdom of a caring gardener to rescue what I see as an ailing two-trunk olive tree that’s been attacked by various parasites, its root system is choking itself and its branches are cutting into each other. It urgently needs pruning and soil rebalancing for the branches to grow harmoniously, rising upwards for all reach sunlight. About the artwork: I created “Interwoven” by using photographs of the Israeli and Palestinian flags yet stripping them of their colours to bring them closer together, visually. I tore up each flag into strips and wove them together around a strong multi-trunk olive tree symbolising wisdom and deep roots to the soil. Never Forget That Oil Isn’t Limitless (NFTOIL) 2013 - C print on reflective metal plates - six 12”x12” or 30x 30 cm panels This work is centered on words and acronyms using both “OIL” and its Persian equivalent نفت but intentionally spelled out using those three letters “NFT” in the roman alphabet. Iran’s economy having long been at the mercy of international oil prices, export markets and now sanctions the artist thought it important to show that total dependency by not using the country’s own alphabet. In that manner Iran’s oil appears all the more out of the country’s control and contingent on external/international factors. The combination of those six letters “N.F.T.O.I.L.” stands as an acronym for the partially hidden message: “Never Forget That Oil Isn’t Limitless”. The debate is left intentionally open as depending on how one reads the words and what one’s personal bias may be ‘Isn’t” can also appear as “Is”. The panels are printed on metal sheets to connote the cold industrialized nature of the subject. While crowds flock to capture themselves by flowering trees in full, curated glory, the artist is pulled in the opposite direction. Every Spring for four years, she waited to capture what was left behind, what lied beneath. Her lens was magnetically drawn downward following the delicate trails and unfolding storyline left by fallen petals. Delicate remnants of those photogenic spectacles are shown decontextualised from their glorious past in every way. Detached from their natural environment, soft fallen petals are seen clinging to the city’s grime, swept into gutters, wedged in hard cracks, drowned in puddles, or trampled in alleyways. The artist sees each fallen petal as a precious vessel holding fragments of secret stories, fleeting memories and unspoken sorrow. Each pile is a dispersed poem. Each accidental composition an elegy. Each windswept trail, like confetti found the morning after the party scattered across the dirty dance floor, echoes the melancholy of better days. In the silence of the city’s overlooked corners, each petal seems to murmur: “Forget me not.” She listens intently knowing it will all be gone tomorrow. This body of work leans into contrasts, between soft and hard textures, traces of nature in harsh urban settings, memory and erasure. My objectives were to glorify the extraordinary beauty of otherwise overlooked parts of our surroundings while celebrating the final cycle of life. I was moved by a single dead leaf most would mindlessly step over. I felt compelled to try and capture its essence and find a way to visually exalt its exquisite beauty and uniqueness for all to see. A variety of different types of leaves will be on show including 36 from the same tree displayed in various stages of decay. The more ravaged they are by time the more exquisite and striking they are to me. As their canvas disappears it reveals their inner life in the form of a most delicate and striking lacework.
